All About Community - L8 Matters

The All About The Community award celebrates how CLTs involve, engage with, and are deeply rooted in their community. People power is at the heart of the CLT movement and the CLTs that were nominated this year are no exception!

The winning CLT has done so much to ensure their project is as inclusive as possible and informed by the needs of its community. Their year has focused on listening, learning, responding and involving communities at every step.

They’ve knocked on hundreds of doors, held many meetings and sought feedback at local markets, food pantries and other events. They’ve forged partnerships with other trusted organisations in the area to build trust. They’ve worked with the local university, held a logo design competition in the neighbourhood, and managed a well-used facebook page.

This is a powerful example of a CLT that is going beyond the creation of physical assets, to building trust, relationships and a shared future.

And the winner is … L8 Matters!

Beautiful Community Led Homes - It Takes a City CLT

When communities are in charge of designing and building homes the likelihood of homes being just right for that place grows immensely.

We want to congratulate all CLTs who have completed homes – getting community led homes built is always going to be a beautiful thing.

The nomination for this project specifically focused on the mission behind the homes –  a mission of providing dignified, high-quality homes and flexible support to people on the long and complicated journey of leaving homelessness. These homes provide a safe haven for residents along with access to flexible support. What’s particularly beautiful about this project, is how the stability, support and belief is helping people to thrive – resident stories include being able to move into secured council homes and having a safe environment to spend time with their children.

This is an inspiring example of what CLTs can do to support people living through some of the most acute cases of housing injustice. This is a temporary site with the homes being transportable. The aim is that one day they will be located on permanent land alongside traditional social housing in partnership with a developer.

And the winner is … It Takes a City CLT!

Can't Stop, Won't Stop - James Neward, Yorspace CLT

The CLT movement is full of inspirational people, and this list highlights some amazing leaders – people who’ve worked hard to empower people in their communities, and people who’ve been inspiring to their team and wider community. Narrowing it down this year to one winner as always has been very, very difficult!

The person who has won this award has been an essential cog for their CLT. Dedicating nearly 15 years of their life to the cause, they have been dogged in their pursuit of funding, navigating seemingly endless system bureaucracy, and bringing the project back from the brink.

They have played a key role in a successful community share issue which raised over £420,000, navigating COVID, managing ballooning costs and the loss of contractors.

Their knowledge and perseverance have shepherded the construction of 14 low-carbon, high-performance homes with affordable tenure and community at their core.

There was so much love and respect that came through in this nomination.

With laughs, cheekiness and an audacious refusal to stop (they’ve already got the next project in their sights), our 2025 can’t stop, won’t stop winner is…James Neward from Yorspace CLT!

Lead Goose - Bridport Cohousing CLT

The Lead Goose award recognises a person or CLT that has made an outstanding contribution to CLTs as a movement and as a network in the past year.

These nominees have all done something amazing for the growth of the CLT movement. But today we are honouring two people from a single CLT.

The winner of this year’s award has had a standout year winning major green energy and housing development awards. Their neighbourhood delivers 53 affordable, near Passivhaus homes for people who would otherwise be priced out of their town. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the terraces include solar panel, triple glazing and air source heat pumps, cutting energy bills and reducing grid demand by 60% through an innovative microgrid. These are homes of the future right now. But that’s not it, there are car-free streets, an orchard, communal food growing.

It is hard not to be blown away and envious of what this community has built – and continues to build – a joyful intergenerational community where roots and connections are running deeper every day.

We are so pleased to celebrate the achievements of this CLT, which formed in back in 2008, today.

And the winners are….Bridport Cohousing CLT

What a Wonderful World - East Marsh United

This award celebrates a CLT that recognises the importance of sustainability. The CLT movement can – and is – delivering projects of huge importance and together we can set the standard for a future way of living in a time of climate crisis.

The project that we are recognising this year comes from a group dedicated to retrofitting homes to bring their neighbourhood into community ownership, which brings significant environmental benefits due to lower carbon emissions. However, what stood out in their nomination was their work to transform their neighbourhood from a tree desert, which had just 3% tree coverage, to a green oasis.

Over the past couple of years, this CLT has also gone above and beyond to connect hundreds of people from their community into a greening programme, recognising the impact that trees have on making their neighbourhood more beautiful, less polluted, and more resilient to high temperatures and flooding. They have included their local community with tree planting days at a local park, in 7 schools and on Rutland Street, where the majority of their homes are based.

Although some local residents believed trees would get vandalised, the care and involvement of so many community members in this programme has made sure that they have successfully planted over 130 trees and 4,500 tree saplings – as of earlier of this year they report that every tree is still standing! Their vision is for these programmes to kick start wider greening efforts across the area.

This is an inspiring example of what CLTs can do to enhance their work from building assets to thinking about how communities can come together to make places that are beautiful, more environmentally aware and better connected.

And the winner is … East Marsh United!

A word about geese

We award the winners of the CLT awards with a wooden goose and ‘honk’ to show our approval.

This is to reflect on the spectacular sight of geese flying together in a V formation. Each bird flies slightly above the bird in front of them, reducing wind resistance and take take turns being the leader.

Just as the birds fly together to chart the path and make it easier for those after them, individual CLTs and their leaders inspire and motivate others. In the CLT movement, CLTs take turns to lead, to support others, and the others ‘honk’ encouragement to the leader.

And all this means we can all carry on delivering on the things our communities want and need for longer!
