CLT Annual Conference 10 May 2011 - London

On 10 May 2011 nearly 150 delegates came together for the 2011 CLT Annual Conference at the Savoy Place, London, including from central government, local government, housing associations, government agencies, community and social enterprise sectors and, most importantly, members of community organisations.

Jointly organised by the CLT Network and its host organisation, the National Housing Federation, the conference focused on the 'big opportunity' for CLTs with the Localism Bill and the wider interest in communities to take control. The conference was opened by Lord Matthew Taylor and was followed by a video message from the Housing Minister, Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP and a plenary speech by Pat Ritchie, Chief Executive of the Homes and Communities Agency.

Sessions during the day covered a range of hot topics, including community energy, food and farming initiatives, innovative approaches to funding and finance, partnering with housing associations, urban CLTs, other forms of community-led housing, to name but a few.  Thanks to the Carnegie UK Trust, delegates were also treated to a session from two major figures from the United States CLT movement, Dev Geotschius, President of the US CLT Network and John Emmeus Davis, Partner of Burlington Associates.

Key quotes from the day:

  • 'It is the journey that matters, not just the bricks and mortar' Peter Couchman, Plunkett Foundation
  • 'Just create the conditions for these communities and the people will appear'  David Cameron, North Harris Trading Co. and Community Land Scotland
