Membership terms and conditions

The National CLT Network exists to support, and is led by, not for profit, community-based Community Land Trust (CLT) organisations.

To be eligible to join as a Member of the Network, you must demonstrate that you comply with the definition of a Community Land Trust as set out in s79 of the Housing and Regeneration Act 2008.

We also ask that all our Members complete an Organisational Health Check (available to download from the 'What package is right for you' page) prior to joining the Network. This is a self-certification exercise designed to assess your standard of governance and is primarily an internal tool for our Members.

The National CLT Network is committed to maintaining the quality reputation of its membership, and we may refuse to register a new member where we feel their practices do not reflect a good standard of governance as a CLT.

Housing and Regeneration Act 2008, S79:

A Community Land Trust is a corporate body which:

  • is established for the express purpose of furthering the social, economic and environmental interests of a local community by acquiring and managing land and other assets in order -
    • to provide benefit to the local community
    • to ensure that the assets are not sold or developed except in a manner which the trust's members think benefits the local community

  • is established under arrangements which are expressly designed to ensure that:
    • any profits from its activities will be used to benefit the local community (otherwise than by being paid directly to members)
    • individuals who live or work in the specified area have the opportunity to become members of the trust (whether or not others can also become members)
    • the members of a trust control it.

If you do not meet these criteria at present, or you are not structured in such a way that you meet the statutory definition of a CLT, you may apply for Start Up or Associate affiliation.

If you have any questions regarding your eligibility to become a member of the National CLT Network, please contact us on 020 3096 7790 or email info@communitylandtrusts.org.uk.
