Community led housing (CLH) is a growing force for social good. Organisations set up and run by ordinary people to develop and manage homes as well as community shops, pubs and other assets important to that community.
They may be seeking to build genuinely affordable homes for their local area, to take control of their own homes through a co-operative, or to live in a convivial community through cohousing. The movement is growing fast as more and more people are feeling the impact of the housing crisis and are deciding to take matters into their own hands.
About the Community Led Homes Programme
The community led housing movement has gained momentum over recent years, particularly following the commitment from Government to invest £300 million in the sector through the Community Housing Fund (CHF). The sector is now on the cusp of significant expansion and there is real potential to move it from a niche emerging market into the mainstream. Our goal is to use this opportunity to strengthen the national and regional infrastructure of support for the sector so that anyone can set up a CLH group and build homes for their community.
This support infrastructure includes:
Grants and support for local Enabling Hubs, organisations that support groups to form and develop successful housing projects, specific to their local circumstances, and that work with councils, housing associations and others to build a supportive local environment for community led housing to thrive.
Training and accreditation for those individuals advising groups.
A National Advice Centre (NAC) providing an enquiry line and a new website with introductory information, technical resources and sector data to support hubs, advisers and groups get housing projects off the ground and completed.
Small grants for groups to cover gaps in funding from sources like Homes England.
About the role
Working closely with our small and ambitious team, and with the other national partners, this role will work at a senior level to drive forward the development of our National Advice Centre.
The challenges and opportunities for this role include:
Liaising with Enabling Hubs and advisers, with those leading the training, hubs support and small grant programmes, and with partner stakeholders like housing associations, councils and developers, to gain and help coordinate sector knowledge to inform content for the website.
Researching and writing resources for community led housing groups.
Commissioning specialist CLH resources, including scoping the work and running tender processes.
Working with the NAC Officer to create and maintain a content plan for the website.
Overseeing the NAC Officer's work to manage sector data, and leading on further developing the database to support the sector's success.
Producing briefings for partners and stakeholders.
Periodic reporting to Programme Manager.
We are looking for a team player who will bring first-rate networking and writing skills to their own role, but also champion continuous learning across the partnership. You should have a good understanding of CLH or of housing development more generally.
This is an exciting opportunity to support stronger learning in the sector. Your motivations might be many and varied – from wanting to develop your career, to having a passion for CLH and housing development, or perhaps you have worked in a field like information or web content management and would like to apply your skills to this new and exciting sector.
Whatever your motivations, we would like to hear from you — particularly if you enjoy learning deeply about a new and emerging sector, have an ability to translate complex subjects into easily understood language, like to drive change, and enjoy working with a team enable their goals. You will also feel strongly about the importance of social justice and the difference that CLH can make.
The role is a fixed term post, running until March 2020. While envisaged as a full-time role we will positively consider applications for part-time roles, and may appoint one or more people to undertake the work part-time rather than recruiting a single person full time.
The working hours are 9-5, Monday to Friday. The location is flexible and home-working will also be considered.
The salary is £35,000 to £38,000 depending on experience.

More about Community Led Homes Partnership and the National CLT Network
Community Led Homes is a partnership of the National CLT Network, UK Cohousing, the Confederation of Co-operative Housing and Locality. We collaborate on the national infrastructure of support for the CLH sector, helping to clarify, improve and coordinate this activity.
This work is being co-funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Power to Change and the Nationwide Foundation.
You will work as an employee of the National CLT Network, the national membership body for Community Land Trusts established in 2010. The National CLT Network provides resources, training and advice for CLTs, and works with Government, local authorities, lenders and funders to establish the best conditions for CLTs to grow and flourish. Some of the notable achievements include:
Securing £300m Government funding for community-led housing, and a full exemption from the Government’s 1% cut in social rents;
Supporting the establishment of over 100 CLTs with small grants and advice;
Significantly raising the political and public profile of CLTs, including among Cabinet Ministers, MPs (70 MPs were engaged on one campaign), policy makers and key partners;
